Hi everyone,

I've been on hiatus from this catalog of Senator Grothman's activities on behalf of the voters of Washington and Ozaukee Counties for the two years, while representing my faculty colleagues in the UW Colleges at the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents meetings.  We come from all over the political spectrum so it seemed appropriate for me to quiet down while I serve in that role -- and so I shall.

For those of you just joining in the spectacle, spell bound by the widening gyre of Senator Grothman's interpretation of life in these United States, this blog has a pretty good catalog up until 2 years ago.  Others have stepped in during that time to take up the slack as my State Senator's commentary has ... continued.

So it was with shock and fear that Lohr watched the Walker agenda. His budget decimated support for public education and directly attacked government workers, including teachers. Her family considered leaving, but decided to stay and fight. Tanya organized locally to recall Scott Walker and his extremist colleagues, including her State Senator Glenn Grothman. She became a coordinator of the Recall campaign and then Chair of the Washington County Democratic Party. And this November, Tanya Lohr will challenge Glenn Grothman for Wisconsin's 20th District Senate Seat.

Apparently.  This does track with the fact that, underlying everything Glenn says, is a belief that the responsibilities of citizenship come in second place to economics.  So, if they have to steal elections "For the good of the economy" it's okay.

State Sen. Glenn Grothman, R-West Bend, a member of the Senate labor committee, said he didn't anticipate changes.

"The state of Wisconsin retirement system is the envy of the country, and why would we change something that is the envy of the country?" Grothman said.

Does Glenn Grothman consider military service to be a job? Apparently not - the Fair Employment Law which came to fruition under Doyle allowed employees to sue for back pay and other punitive damages suffered over the course of their time on the job, and Glenn says it's unfair to Wisconsin. He also remarks about his distrust for a jury, and his distrust for people in general, and hears his favorite protest song...

Marines, sailors, airmen, and soldiers have historically been untrustworthy to the United States of America compared to politicians, right Senator Grothman? Hey - politicians are people, too. But you gotta hand it to Glenn for entering the ring-of-Sly when called upon. Try getting that out of Scott Walker or Mitt Romney.

Windfall! Rich will get richer from new tax credit

On a chilly late February evening, the state's deepest-pocketed business lobby held its annual awards event at Milwaukee's Pfister Hotel to celebrate its most successful legislative session in memory.

Members of Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce toasted state Sen. Glenn Grothman there for spearheading the "most exemplary public policy initiative in support of manufacturing in more than 35 years," a news release says.

There's good reason WMC was so excited: The new policy effectively eliminates state income taxes for many of Wisconsin's corporations, factory owners and agricultural producers by the time it's fully phased in.

"We had to do something to change the business climate in the state … and this does it big-time," says Grothman, R-West Bend.

Slipped into Gov. Scott Walker's 2011-2013 budget at the last moment, the domestic production tax credit will cost the state $360 million in revenue over the next four years and some $130 million each year thereafter, according to the non-partisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau. Critics warn the impact could be even greater, a key point in a state still struggling with budget shortfalls.

Glenn Grothman: still wrong on single parent families and abuse.

Our Glenn continues to get press, this time in the National Law Journal.  Of course, they were able to figure out that it's poverty, not having a single parent, that accounts for the increase in child abuse -- the very poverty Senator Grothman's political views help to create.

Blame poverty, not parents

A Wisconsin state senator is only the latest public official to attack single mothers. (Remember former Vice President Dan Quayle's attack on the fictional television character Murphy Brown for being a single mother, thus contributing to a "poverty of values"?) Glenn Grothman sought to pass legislation emphasizing "nonmarital parenthood" as a cause of abuse and neglect. His proposed bill would have required public education about this point and highlight the role of fathers in preventing abuse. (The bill failed to pass this legislative session, but the state senator remains committed to getting his message out.) Grothman, himself unmarried and childless, sees this measure as necessary because people "make fun of old-fashioned families." 

He couldn't be more wrong. The idealized "Leave it to Beaver" family is hardly the object of scorn. Even more, it never reflected the reality of many households in America. Now it does so even less — there are 13.7 million single parent homes nationwide, including 26 percent of all children. Five times as many mothers as fathers are single parents. And at least 4 percent of children live with two unmarried parents.

Glenn Grothman: his views on Abstinence-based sex ed are a threat to young people.

Senator Grothman's beliefs about abstinence based sex education put high schoolers at risk across the state... it's like requiring them to conceal carry and then refusing to provide proper instruction.  Here's more proof.

On the other hand, Grothman's beliefs will be be the cause of a lot more abortions -- needless deaths caused so he can make a splash with his religious base -- so that should keep him in business.

A new study from the Guttmacher Institute unsurprisingly finds that greater knowledge about contraceptive services is directly correlated to a decrease in young adults’ risky sexual behavior. However, after quizzing a nationally representative sample of 1,800 sexually active Americans between the ages of 18 and 29 on their basic knowledge of contraception methods, Guttmacher reports that “more than half of young men and a quarter of young women received low scores on contraceptive knowledge, and six in 10 underestimated the effectiveness of oral contraceptives.” 

Glenn Grothman's war on women has consequences and now he's up against the wall.

You may know Wisconsin’s Tea Party state senator Glenn Grothman from his insinuations that single-parents are abusing their kids or his lesser known proclamation that “The Left and the social welfare establishment want children born out of wedlock because they are far more likely to be dependent on the government.” Perhaps you know Grothman as that dude who called all the protesters from last year “slobs” or maybe you have an extra twinge of contempt for Mr. Grothman, as I do, after he authored a bill that shifts control of Milwaukee’s technical school board over to his business friends.

The list of Grothman’s political offenses is long and his appearances on Fox TV have been many – all the better to fan the flames of anger in thousands of Wisconsin women, many of whom just so happen to be assembling at the steps of Wisconsin’s Capitol building tomorrow, Saturday Apirl 28th. I’m certain we will have an opportunity to hear a few words from Tanya Lohr then. I can’t wait.

Jezebel usually puts things a bit bluntly but, here we are.  Glenn is afraid his views on women will be misrepresented?  Hard to see how anyone could make him look worse than he has himself but, okay.


Anti-Woman Politician Refuses to Debate Congresswoman Because She'll Make Him Say Dumb Things

Fed up with the nonstop anti-woman crap emanating from Wisconsin State Senator Glenn Grothman's mouth, State Rep. Kelda Helen Roys offered to debate him one on one, mano a womano, in public. Unsurprisingly, he turned her down, saying that she wanted to "to gain further platform to misrepresent the Republican position on a variety of issues," which is coward code for "my views are so terrible that not even I am capable of representing them in a way that doesn't make me sound like an asshole."

If the War on Women were an actual war, Wisconsin State Senator Glenn Grothman wouldn't be Rambo, but he'd be close — he'd be one of Rambo's supporting gunman who isn't important enough to have a character name but who is in the background of a lot of shots where Rambo is roaring and firing a gun at something. Grothman's achievements so far this year include recommending that abused women remember the good times rather than leave their husbands, blaming single mothers for child abuse, and sponsoring a bill in Wisconsin that repealed the state's equal pay law, because money is just "more important to men."

He's an entire casserole of WTF with a sprinkling of crispy fried onions on top.

A state assemblywoman is calling out a state senator over a series of recent remarks made by the latter regarding women's rights and their roles in society.

Rep. Kelda Roys (D-Madison) sent a letter to Sen. Grothman (R-West Bend) challenging him to a 60-minute debate on those topics.

"A debate would provide you the perfect opportunity to expound on some of your more surprising comments about women," wrote Roys, "including your apparent belief that money may be more important for men than women. I believe your views are woefully out of touch with the needs and concerns of women and our families, and I am confident that a public and open airing of these views is the most effective way to educate the public."

Glenn Grothman knows what women want: less money than a man.

And so on.

And really, the more people who read everything Glenn says, the better.

Wisconsin Equal Pay Law Repealed Because "Money Is More Important For Men" | Care2 Causes

Over at the Daily Beast, Michelle Goldberg  writes a detailed account of the repeal and the effect it will have in the state.  Goldberg also interviews Republican state senator Glenn Grothman, who was an enthusiastic fan of repealing the law.  According to Grothman, not only is there no actual pay gap between the sexes, if there was one it wouldn’t matter anyway.  After all, men need money more than women do, since they have families to support.  “You could argue that money is more important for men,” he told Goldberg.  “I think a guy in their first job, maybe because they expect to be a breadwinner someday, may be a little more money-conscious. To attribute everything to a so-called bias in the workplace is just not true.”

Grothman’s views on women in the workplace is very 1960s sitcom to start with, but his understanding of breadwinning is even more so.  Many families have two breadwinners, as both partners either chose to or have to both be in the workplace.  And the majority of families lead by just one parent have mothers at the helm.

Then again, when asked about his source for his figures that prove there is no wage gap between the sexes, Grothman stated it was Ann Coulter.  That’s sound research to base legislation on.
