On a chilly late February evening, the state's deepest-pocketed business lobby held its annual awards event at Milwaukee's Pfister Hotel to celebrate its most successful legislative session in memory.Members of Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce toasted state Sen. Glenn Grothman there for spearheading the "most exemplary public policy initiative in support of manufacturing in more than 35 years," a news release says.There's good reason WMC was so excited: The new policy effectively eliminates state income taxes for many of Wisconsin's corporations, factory owners and agricultural producers by the time it's fully phased in."We had to do something to change the business climate in the state … and this does it big-time," says Grothman, R-West Bend.Slipped into Gov. Scott Walker's 2011-2013 budget at the last moment, the domestic production tax credit will cost the state $360 million in revenue over the next four years and some $130 million each year thereafter, according to the non-partisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau. Critics warn the impact could be even greater, a key point in a state still struggling with budget shortfalls.

Our Glenn continues to get press, this time in the National Law Journal. Of course, they were able to figure out that it's poverty, not having a single parent, that accounts for the increase in child abuse -- the very poverty Senator Grothman's political views help to create.
Blame poverty, not parents
A Wisconsin state senator is only the latest public official to attack single mothers. (Remember former Vice President Dan Quayle's attack on the fictional television character Murphy Brown for being a single mother, thus contributing to a "poverty of values"?) Glenn Grothman sought to pass legislation emphasizing "nonmarital parenthood" as a cause of abuse and neglect. His proposed bill would have required public education about this point and highlight the role of fathers in preventing abuse. (The bill failed to pass this legislative session, but the state senator remains committed to getting his message out.) Grothman, himself unmarried and childless, sees this measure as necessary because people "make fun of old-fashioned families."
He couldn't be more wrong. The idealized "Leave it to Beaver" family is hardly the object of scorn. Even more, it never reflected the reality of many households in America. Now it does so even less — there are 13.7 million single parent homes nationwide, including 26 percent of all children. Five times as many mothers as fathers are single parents. And at least 4 percent of children live with two unmarried parents.
Glenn continues to make us famous.

However, after quizzing a nationally representative sample of 1,800 sexually active Americans between the ages of 18 and 29 on their basic knowledge of contraception methods, Guttmacher reports that “more than half of young men and a quarter of young women received low scores on contraceptive knowledge, and six in 10 underestimated the effectiveness of oral contraceptives.”

A state assemblywoman is calling out a state senator over a series of recent remarks made by the latter regarding women's rights and their roles in society.
Rep. Kelda Roys (D-Madison) sent a letter to Sen. Grothman (R-West Bend) challenging him to a 60-minute debate on those topics.
"A debate would provide you the perfect opportunity to expound on some of your more surprising comments about women," wrote Roys, "including your apparent belief that money may be more important for men than women. I believe your views are woefully out of touch with the needs and concerns of women and our families, and I am confident that a public and open airing of these views is the most effective way to educate the public."
And so on.
And really, the more people who read everything Glenn says, the better.

Goldberg also interviews Republican state senator Glenn Grothman, who was an enthusiastic fan of repealing the law. According to Grothman, not only is there no actual pay gap between the sexes, if there was one it wouldn’t matter anyway. After all, men need money more than women do, since they have families to support. “You could argue that money is more important for men,” he told Goldberg. “I think a guy in their first job, maybe because they expect to be a breadwinner someday, may be a little more money-conscious. To attribute everything to a so-called bias in the workplace is just not true.”Grothman’s views on women in the workplace is very 1960s sitcom to start with, but his understanding of breadwinning is even more so. Many families have two breadwinners, as both partners either chose to or have to both be in the workplace. And the majority of families lead by just one parent have mothers at the helm.Then again, when asked about his source for his figures that prove there is no wage gap between the sexes, Grothman stated it was Ann Coulter. That’s sound research to base legislation on.

It should come as no surprise that many of the weirdest, most outrageous bills that have popped up around the country in recent months focus on women. Take a recent Wisconsin Senate bill that would have required the state's Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board to "emphasize" single parenthood "as a contributing factor to child abuse and neglect." The bill, which happily died this month, had two sponsors. One, state Sen. Glenn Grothman, thinks liberals want children to be born out of wedlock "because they are more likely to be dependent on the government." The bill's other sponsor, a state representative named Don Pridemore, has said that spouses in abusive relationships should try to stay in them rather than divorce.
Jezebel is really picking on Glenn these days for saying things any 1950's vintage Conservative would say. Plus they do have a picture of Glenn picking his nose.
Truthfully, he had this coming, and I assume he's enjoying all the attention.
Yet More Dickery Oozes Out of the Talking Holes of Wisconsin’s Cheesy Republicans
For people like Republican state senator Glenn Grothman (pictured here probably picking his nose in front of constituents and a major proponent of the repeal effort), not only was the Equal Pay Enforcement Act burdensome to those poor, beleaguered businesses who no doubt found it impossible to both turn a profit and pay women the same — if not, gasp, more! — than their male colleagues, it went against the natural, nurturing impulses of women. Amid the piles verbal feces that spluttered out of Grothman's mouth when he was given an opportunity to defend his support of the act's repeal, Grothman offered up what we might think of as an amateur's attempt to explain sociological phenomena, that is, we might think that if anybody in the GOP believed in the sciences, social or otherwise.
So we really do have to assume that Glenn believes what he says. More's the pity.

It's been a noisy week of Grothman-powered news this week, largely because as soon as things start to swing back to simple accounting procedures, Senator Grothman decides to say something crazy. Again.
People always wonder whether Glenn actually means any of this wicked nonsense. I think this is the wrong question. I'm coming around to the working hypothesis that it doesn't matter -- that he doesn't say any of it because he believes or doesn't believe it. I'm starting to suspect the sole intent is to be inflammatory, without any particular end except confusion and disbelief, and to eat up news cycles.
So, a round up from the past week or so.

State Sen. Glenn Grothman (R-WI), is receiving a well-deserved chanclaso for sponsoring legislation that paints single moms as child abusers. Grothman argues that single women are intentionally getting pregnant so they can receive welfare to support their poor choices, despite research that shows most of these pregnancies are unplanned. And far from keeping his ridiculous views to himself, he wants to legislatively stigmatize these women by citing their predicament as a contributing factor to child abuse. There's actually a reasonable solution to decreasing the number of unwanted pregnancies in Wisconsin. Instead of trying to slander single mothers as child abusers, the state legislature can make birth control more readily available. Or better yet, the Wisconsin state legislature can require public schools to offer a comprehensive sex education class based on facts and science focusing on the importance of using protection and the effectiveness of birth control. So Sen. Grothman, fuera with your antiquated views on single mothers. They have no place in the state legislature.
So instead of burning the midnight oil on something exceedingly powerful like salvaging the mining bill Grothman spends his time on nonessential legislation that amounts to nothing more than red meat for the far right. My sense is that for this Senator provocation over accomplishment should be the order of business.Believe me Tom, if he did he'd still never make eye contact.

I spent a good part of my life raising a daughter by myself without the benefit of marriage so I submit to you that I know more about this subject than the officious senator. I guess that my former circumstances make me guilty of child neglect as well.
But I doubt Grothman has the courage to say that to my face.
Wisconsin State Senator Glenn Grothman is concerned about child abuse and neglect. He sits on a state committee that makes recommendations on how to handle the problem. The problem for Grothman is that he sees the problem in simplistic terms. Grothman sees marriage as some sort of automatic cure to child abuse. His solution was to introduce SB 570 which would require “The Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board to emphasize nonmarital parenthood as a contributing factor to child abuse and neglect.”
While it is a good idea to help unmarried couples or single or widowed parents, this is not what Grothman is trying to do. His effort is not to provide education, training or other guidance to parents and children in high risk categories. It is his idea to simply get these parents to wed because the problem will then lessen magically.
Grothman is right that 40% of the births in the U.S. are outside of marriage. He is also right that most of those births come in unstable situations. In the past, when almost all births were from married couples, there was still plenty of child abuse and neglect. That was because failed marriages stayed intact. Violence and abuse was endemic in those situations. Today, those bad marriages either never happened or ended quickly.
It is not accurate to say that just because a couple in a bad family situation is married then the children are safer. The problem of a poor family environment still exists whether a couple is married or not.
Nevertheless, Grothman sees this as simply a matter of choice. In Grothman’s eyes, the “unwanted or mistimed pregnancies” are the “choice of the women.” Yes, these are Grothman’s thoughts: Single women are getting pregnant by the millions deliberately. Grothman has done everything but throw pity at the poor men entrapped by these mischievous and lustful women.
Grothman put it another way. He said “I think a lot of women are adopting the single motherhood lifestyle because the government creates a situation in which it is almost preferred.”
Oh my. Is there not, somewhere, a moderate Republican in Washington County willing to run against Senator Grothman?
Aren't you people tired of being held hostage by this guy? Aren't you tired of his existence being the cause for most of the Democratic organizing that may well bring down Walker, and Fitzgerald, etc?
Don't you long to be able to stand up as a Republican and lay claim to a sane economic program and a Goldwater era "conservatives stay out of people's personal lives" world view?

Wisconsin state senator Glenn Grothman went on the Alan Colmes show on Friday to discuss a controversial new bill he authored that would require the state’s Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board to officially label single parenthood as “a contributing factor to child abuse and neglect.”
The bill was seen as a slap in the face to single parents in Wisconsin, who are raising 31 percent of children in the state.
Grothman told Colmes that the country’s out-of-wedlock birth rate is the “choice of the women,” who should be “educated that this is a mistake.” When Colmes countered with statistics about the high number of pregnancies that are unintended, Grothman said that many women are “trained” to lie and say that their planned pregnancies are actually unintended:
