“Sadly, Governor Doyle today signed a bill requiring Wisconsin’s school districts to teach sex education without showing any bias toward sexually active pupils,” said Grothman.

The biggest irony, as always, is that good sex education -- uncomfortably thorough for Glenn, no doubt -- not only lowers the rate of teenage pregnancy, but even the rate of teenage sexual activity.

--which Glenn would have known had he bothered to do any research on this topic, beyond checking in with his conscience... and Ginny's conscience.

While the Obama administration is attempting to overturn the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy on homosexual servicemen and servicewomen—a plan endorsed by Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who said that “allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly would be the right thing to do”—state Sen. Glenn Grothman (R-West Bend) bemoaned a new law that would prohibit Wisconsin schools from promoting “bias against pupils of any race, gender, sexual orientation, or ethnic or cultural background or against sexually active pupils or pupils with disabilities.” He prefers a “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy for gay students and their educators.

In an interview with a reporter from The Cap Times, Grothman fondly recalled the good old days at his Mequon high school in the 1970s, when “homosexuality was not on anybody’s radar. And that’s a good thing.” (He did admit that there were “a few guys who would make fun of a few effeminate boys” back then, but that doesn’t count, apparently.) As for today’s more enlightened sex educators, Grothman claims that some of them “would like it if more kids became homosexuals.”"

Folks like Grothman, who apparently see no harm in bullying “a few effeminate boys” and actively encouraging, if not outright forcing, gay youths to stay in the closet, only serve to perpetuate an extremely unhealthy environment for all of us. Gay teen suicide rates aren’t so high because being gay makes you suicidal; they’re high because being gay in a society that is so nasty toward you for it can really suck.

One of the bill’s most vocal opponents, Glenn Grothman, R-West Bend, is especially scornful of the bill’s requirement that there be no “bias” based on a student’s sexual orientation, a protection he attempted to remove from the bill with an amendment that failed to get enough votes to pass. Grothman explains that he believes the topic should not be discussed at all in schools. “Would you want your daughter’s teacher in 7th grade talking with her about homosexuality?” he asks. “They should be talking about Algebra.”

Good sex ed is still good sex ed... but he's damned right about teaching 7th graders algebra. But if he believes this he should get on the stick and fix the budgeting problem that has, for decades now, penalized West Bend schools by keeping out state funding low -- assuming anyone in the legislature, besides Leah Vukmir, will even talk to him anymore.

Maybe we need a state Senator who can play well with others.

Senator Grothman reiterated his call to disband the Clean Energy Committee as Wisconsin has had its second year in a row of temperatures below average, calling the whole rationale of the original task force in question. At the first committee meeting Senator Miller adjourned the committee while Senator Grothman tried to get his attention to discuss this fact.

I suppose he doesn't mind subsidizing the coal and gas industries, but wind? Bad bad bad.

Wis. senator calls for disbanding state's Clean Energy Committee

Wisconsin state Senator Glenn Grothman says he's not convinced climate change is happening in our state. Representing West Bend, he serves on the state's Clean Energy Committee. He says the committee should disband and stop pursuing alternative energy options for the state.

"The whole reason we're spending this additional money is because we're supposed to be fighting global warming," says Sen. Grothman during a phone interview. "Well, if we have two years where temperatures in Wisconsin are below average, why are we doing it?"

Speculation on a possible challenger for U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold has conservatives casting an eye toward state Sen. Glenn Grothman, a West Bend Republican.

Elections will be held on Nov. 2 for 36 of the 100 seats in the U.S. Senate.

“Lots of people have asked me about whether I’d run for his seat,” Grothman said.

At 'public' hearing on energy, the public is relegated to sit in the back of the bus

Never happened. And as the hours dragged on -- and on -- and on -- without a single member of a citizen group or individual citizen called to testify, it sometimes became theater of the absurd, as State Sen. Glenn Grothman and State Rep. Jim Ott put on a show to challenge whether global warming was really happening. If you could keep a sense of humor, what John LaForge of Nukewatch called a Flat Earth Society meeting was kind of amusing -- for awhile.

"The reason to fight global warming is to make it colder," Ott, a former TV weatherman said. "How much colder would you like it to be?" It was, indeed, cold outside, not that it had any relevance.

Grothman, meanwhile, declaring that the last two years had been colder in Wisconsin, asked witnesses how many years in a row it would have to get cooler before they gave up this silly global warming idea.

A representative of the Union of Concerned Scientists said the last decade was the warmest on record, and explained that climate change is measured in periods of 20 to 30 years, while weather -- which is measured by TV weathermen --- is measured pretty much all the time.

And Glenn isn't embarrassed to say this stuff out loud. How is it 80% of the Republican Party in Washington County thought Glenn would be an improvement over Mary Panzer?

Senate Education Comm. Republicans promote ignorance in Healthy Youth Act amendments

The Healthy Youth Act is on track for passage by the state Senate, thankfully without amendments offered by Sen. Glenn Grothman and his Republican cronies. Grothman has so many bad ideas an entire blog is devoted to following them.

The most offensive of Grothman’s amendments would allow a school to use instructional methods and materials that promote bias against pupils based on sexual orientation. If being a gay teenager was not difficult enough, Grothman wants to institutionalize discrimination in the classroom. Not only against gay students, but sexually active students as well. The benefits of abstinence are required teaching under the Healthy Youth Act but Grothman appears to prefer sexually active students branded with a modern-day scarlet letter.

When fear replaces clear headedness, you get this: religious groups that don't believe in evolution attempting to foist a half-baked health policy on the rest of us.

Message from Sen. Grothman concerning SEX ED bill

It is vital for all sincere Christians to call their State Senators at this time and tell them to vote against Senate Bill 324/Assembly Bill 458. It would also be a good idea to call your State Representative and find out how they voted. If they voted for AB 458, ask them to publicly renounce their vote.

Glenn has been politically correct [for his species] and scientifically wrong on this topic for years now [check here, here, here, and here]. What we can be sure of, should this bit of revanchist puritanism pass is, ironically, an increase in unwanted teenage pregnancies and, thus, an increase in the number of abortions.

We can also rely on an increase in the rates of sexual transmitted diseases among young people who, unable to practice sex responsibly, will resort to the kind of irresponsible sexual activity that characterizes anyone in the throes of the dangerous, but traditional, hormone rush of adolescence.

I don't know what kind of Christian wants to increase the misery of people, but apparently those are the people to whom Glenn is addressing his advertising here.

And I wish he'd quit it.

Glenn Grothman: wrong for opposing improved education.

If there's a wy to improve education, Glenn's agin' it.

Sen. Glenn Grothman, R-West Bend, said Obama’s education reforms show he has not considered the U.S. Constitution while making policy.

“Under our U.S. Constitution, it is not the business of the federal government to get involved in K-12 education,” Grothman said. “And it is appalling that for the second administration in a row, we have a president who has no respect for our Constitution.”

Grothman also said he plans to reintroduce a bill that will eliminate calculators from elementary math education, saying they have become a “crutch” which prevent American students from competing with international students.

Those international students are, of course, using calculators and, had he read his history more closely, Glenn would have noticed that the whole States Rights question was settled in 1865.

But it has been sublimely satisfying to watch Glenn turn on the Bush Presidency.

The measure might face some opposition from law enforcement and some Republican state lawmakers. However, even some conservatives like state Sen. Glenn Grothman of West Bend are mulling over a "yes" vote.

Grothman said he hasn't made up his mind yet, but is inclined to vote for it unless someone gives him "a good reason not to".

"It wouldn't shock me if I vote for it," Grothman said.
