Glenn Grothman: illegal immigrants can work for illegal wages, but not drive!

Hi everybody,

Whew. Now we'll be safe.

Glenn once again protecting us from illegal immigrants:

Applicants for professional licenses must give immigration status

State Sen. Glenn Grothman (R-West Bend) said the state should verify immigration status by using the federal database.

“Once the system is up and running, the costs should be minimal,” Grothman said.

Will Wisconsin employers who depend upon inexpensive illegal immigrants for labor be happy about this?

Actually this has more to do with voting than immigration. It's another giant leap toward voter ID that requires proof of citizenship. Most states that are pushing for voter ID are now asking for proof your a legal American. And most people that I've worked with buying a house don't know where they put birth certificates and other important papers.

It simply creates the impression that voting is more trouble than it's worth. It's also a game of intimidation. As a state license holder, born in Milwaukee, I am now required to prove I'm a U.S. citizen or lose the license, maybe even the right to vote eventually.

I think you're probably right about intimidation and putting a crowbar of some kind under our right to vote.

The latest news out of the raided kosher meat plants in Iowa tells the story: illegal workers were arrested for lacking [begin scary German Gestapo accent] "the proper papers" but the media ignored, until last week, the fact that these workers were hired illegally (in order to maximize their bosses' profits) and abused ruthlessly -- as in coal-mining-before-unions-in-19th-century-Wales.

Oh, and ignored by the government agencies responsible for making sure workers don't get beaten or *deliberately* injured on the job. Of course, the current administration has made sure those agencies have been defunded since, well, it causes nothing but trouble for "honest employers." Ahem.

Thanks for your note!
